From classic kids’ books to modern blockbuster movies, delivery men (and women) have had a place in our fictional life for decades. Here is a list of some of our favourite fictional delivery characters:
Pat Clifton (Postman Pat)
First on our list and probably one of the best-known children’s characters is Pat Clifton, better known as Postman Pat. Postman Pat, and his black and white cat called Jess, is a postman in the fictional village of Greendale and town of Pencaster where he has his adventures. A well-loved children’s show that started in the early 1980’s and has had newer updated versions created through the decades.
Agent K (Men In Black 2)
Once an agent in a secret organisation saving the world from Alien invasion, now with his memory removed Agent K has found employment at the postal service which he seems to enjoy! With the earth at risk once again, Agent K re-joins the team at MIB to save the world again!
Kiki’s Delivery Service
Kiki is a Witch who needs to support herself, and with only a broom she decides to start an air delivery service. She gets to know the new town she is living in and has adventures by delivering items on her broomstick! This is from a Studio Ghibli popular anime film.
Moist Von Lipwig
Terry Pratchett’s Discworld is a fantastic and magical place and of course a post office in the city of Ankh Morpork is not like a post office anywhere else in the universe. The Post Master of this one of a kind Post Office is called Moist Von Lipwig and with his golden suit and easy charm he certainly makes an impact on the city. Moist is first introduced to the Discworld in the novel Going Postal, but reappears in other books including Making Money and Raising Steam.
The Jolly Postman
Popular children’s authors Janet and Allan Ahlberg created the Jolly Postman book which was published in 1986 and follows the story of an unnamed postie as he delivers letters to characters from traditional children’s stories. It was unique when published as you could actually open the envelopes and read the letters as you follow the narrative through the book.
Willie Lumpkin is a Marvel Comic creation, best known as the mail man for the Fantastic Four. Originally created back in 1959, Willie encountered a range of humorous situations as he delivered mail to the people of Glenville. Known as good natured and well liked, the artist Jack Kirby then included Willie in Fantastic Four #11 Comic in the sixties, and he was also included in the recent movies about the four.
